SALEM — Oregon is reportedly considering replacing the western meadowlark after county commissioners began demonstrating a far more recognizable bird.

Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington recently displayed the proposed replacement during a public meeting. Coos County Commissioner John Sweet has previously been photographed displaying the same species.

At this point, it’s starting to look migratory.

The middle finger has several advantages. Everybody recognizes it, it requires no habitat protection, and it’s already found statewide from Portland to Brookings.

It’s also incredibly versatile. In Oregon it can mean hello, goodbye, thank you, move over, nice parking job, California’s that way, or I respectfully disagree with your public comment.

Basically, it’s Oregon’s version of aloha.

Hawaii got a beautiful word.

Oregon got a finger.

For now, the western meadowlark remains the official state bird. But with this kind of bipartisan support from county government, its days may be numbered.
